A suitable site has been selected for new

gaol premises. Requests permission by telegram

to have it accepted as a loan work, and to

undertake preliminary work pending approval of the

whole scheme.

Provision for a new gaol and Police Training

School, Ngau-Shi-Wan was made in the 1924 Estimates,

$50,000 to be spent in the year; no total cost

was given.

In the 1925

estimates the total cost was

(30)in 52753/28.

(in core)

given as 3,700,000 of which $200,000 was to be

spent in the year.

No provision was made in the 1926 estimates.

The Governor said in introducing them that he had

been compelled to direct cessation of work "The

present makeshift arrangements are very unsatisfactory

and uneconomical" he said. He trusted that the Gaol

would be one of the first of the abandoned works to

be undertaken when times improved.

No provision was made thereafter.

In 1920-23 $395,978.75 was spent on this Ngau-

Shi-Wan site (shown in dotted red lines in plan

under (16) in 52753/28) This site fell within land

required under Mr.Dawson's (of the Aj Ministry)

Scheme for aerodrome development (7) in

62753/29 we asked the Governor to avoidaction which

M2 Dawson's would prejudice the carrying out of t scheme

at some future date.

Hence the need for a new site.
